Google Earth Placemarkers and KMZ Files Example

Viewing the Extreme Series Placemarkers

Visit http://earth.google.com/gallery/

Search by keyword: “extreme” for the Extreme Series

Click on “Open in Google Earth” to view the placemarkers

Creating Your Own Placemarkers Folder

Start your project by creating a new “Folder” in the Google Earth “My Places” sidebar. Click on “Add/Folder” in the top menu. Name the folder based on your collection of resources.

Select the Placemark tool in Google Earth and anchor the location of each of the photos in your Earth file.

In the “Description” box that pops up with each new Placemark, name the Placemark with the location. Include the image in the Placemark Description box by typing in the simple html image code from the handout.

To locate the image information follow the steps below:

Right-click or control-click on image to “view image”

Copy and paste the web address into the html code

Right click on the image and click on properties to view the height and width

Add streaming videos or audio files by finding the media online and click to Stream. As it streams, right-click (control-click for Macs) and then click properties and copy location to paste into the placemark description box.

Post audio files and podcasts with your placemark. Copy the location of the streaming audio from the properties window or from the URL and paste it with the placemark description.

Build out several more Placemarks and then highlight your new Folder by clicking once. In the top Earth menu choose (File/Save/Save Place as) “kmz” to share with others.

Basic HTML Code
You can add basic HTML code to the Placemarkers to modify the text.

Bold: Text
Italics: Text
Underline: Text
Color:

Text
Text
white, red, maroon, pink, orange, yellow, green, blue, navy, purple, gray, black.
Or
http://www.w3schools.com/html/html_colors.asp.
Alignment:
Text

<palign=”center>Text

Text

Text

Line break:
The repeated code

will skip a line. Because of the difficulty in indenting, blank lines are used to indicate new paragraphs in HTML.

Your Task

Locate four unique locations in Google Earth that are associated

Locate images for each location on the Internet and descriptions
